Shirak Province is located in northwestern Armenia, bordering Georgia to the north and Turkey to the west. Its administrative center is Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city and one of the country’s most important cultural centers. Other notable towns include Artik and Maralik. According to the 2022 population census, the province has approximately 235,000 residents.
Shirak is a high-altitude region characterized by broad volcanic plains, rolling hills, mountain meadows and dramatic open landscapes. It is considered the coldest region of Armenia, with a strongly continental climate. Summers are generally mild and pleasant, while winters are long, cold and snowy, particularly in the northern highlands around Ashotsk and Amasia.
Agriculture and livestock farming are important parts of life in Shirak. The fertile highland plains are traditionally used for growing grains, potatoes and other crops, while cattle and sheep breeding are widespread in rural areas. The region is also known for its distinctive cuisine, dairy products and traditional dishes associated with Gyumri and the surrounding villages.
Gyumri is the cultural heart of the province. Its historic Kumayri district preserves remarkable 19th-century architecture built from black and reddish volcanic tuff. The city is famous for its arts, crafts, museums, traditional architecture and distinctive sense of humor. Important landmarks include the Black Fortress, historic churches and numerous museums and galleries.
Beyond Gyumri, Shirak has an exceptionally rich historical heritage. Marmashen Monastery stands above the Akhurian River, while Harichavank is one of the region’s most impressive medieval monastic complexes. The ancient Yereruyk Basilica is among Armenia’s most important early Christian monuments, and numerous archaeological sites across the province reveal an even older history.
Nature is another major attraction of Shirak. Lake Arpi National Park protects high-altitude wetlands, grasslands and important habitats for migratory and resident birds. The landscapes around Ashotsk are especially beautiful in winter, when deep snow transforms the region into one of Armenia’s most distinctive destinations for winter activities and photography.
Shirak is ideal for cultural, historical, gastronomic, nature and winter tours. For photographers, the province offers traditional Gyumri architecture, vast highland landscapes, snow-covered villages, ancient monasteries, dramatic skies, rural life and excellent opportunities for wildlife and bird photography around Lake Arpi.
