The Yeranos Mountains rise above the Azat River and reservoir as a long dry ridge of red rock, open slopes and wide views toward Mount Ararat.
They form one of the southwestern branches of the Gegham mountain system and create a natural boundary between the high volcanic landscapes to the north and the Ararat Plain below.
The character of Yeranos is strongly shaped by dryness. Lower slopes have a semi-desert appearance, while higher ground gradually changes into dry mountain steppe.
This lack of dense forest gives hikers something different: uninterrupted views. From many sections of the ridge, the landscape opens in several directions at once, with Azat Reservoir below and Mount Ararat appearing beyond the plain in clear weather.
The mountains also hide smaller geological surprises. Pink Canyon cuts through part of the range, while erosion has created unusual pillars and sculptural rock formations across the slopes.
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to explore Yeranos. The normally dry terrain briefly becomes greener and flowering shrubs add color against the red and brown rock.
Summer, by contrast, can be intensely hot and exposed, with very little shade.
For hikers, Yeranos offers both shorter explorations and long ridge routes. The landscape is physically open but visually rich, changing continuously as the trail rises above the reservoir.
For photographers, the combination of red rock, blue water, Mount Ararat, open sky and spring vegetation can produce some of the most distinctive landscape images within easy reach of Yerevan.
