Ararat Province is located in the south-western part of Armenia, mainly across the fertile Ararat Plain and the foothills surrounding it. The administrative center is Artashat, one of Armenia’s historic towns. The province has a population of approximately 250,000 people, with most residents living in towns and agricultural communities across the plain.
The landscape varies considerably, from lowland areas at around 800–1,000 meters above sea level to mountainous terrain rising above 3,000 meters. The region has a dry continental climate, characterized by hot, sunny summers and relatively cold winters. In the lowlands, summer temperatures commonly reach 30–35°C and can occasionally approach 40°C, while winter temperatures often fall below freezing. The mountainous areas are considerably cooler and receive more snow.
Ararat Province is one of Armenia’s important agricultural regions, known for its vineyards, orchards and fertile farmland. Its combination of warm climate, abundant sunshine and the soils of the Ararat Plain has supported agriculture and winemaking for centuries.
The province is also rich in history and natural attractions. Its most famous landmark is Khor Virap Monastery, an important pilgrimage site offering one of Armenia’s most spectacular views of Mount Ararat. Other notable places include the ancient Dvin archaeological site, Khosrov Forest State Reserve, traditional villages, mountain valleys and scenic viewpoints.
With its ancient heritage, rural landscapes, wildlife and exceptional views of Mount Ararat, Ararat Province is particularly attractive for cultural tours, nature travel, hiking and photography.
