Pink Canyon is one of the most unusual hidden landscapes around Azat Reservoir, carved into the dry slopes of the Yeranos Mountains.
From a distance, this part of the region can appear almost empty — pale hills, dry ridges and volcanic terrain. Inside the canyon, however, the landscape changes completely.
The walls reveal layers of pink, red, cream and earthy stone, folded and striped into patterns that look almost painted.
Some sections are narrow enough that hikers move closely between the rock walls. In others, the gorge suddenly widens and opens views toward the surrounding mountains.
Along the route, erosion has created curious natural forms, including pillars, cavities and rock shapes that invite imagination. One well-known formation in the wider Yeranos landscape is often compared to a sphinx.
Pink Canyon is particularly attractive because it offers dramatic geology without requiring a high mountain summit. It can therefore appeal to travelers who want an adventurous landscape experience but prefer less elevation gain than a full ascent of the surrounding mountains.
The colors are strongly affected by light. Midday can reveal the brightest tones, while morning and evening create deeper shadows and more texture in the layered stone.
For photographers, this is one of the most creative natural locations near the Ararat Plain. Wide-angle images show the canyon geometry, while closer compositions reveal patterns, lines and subtle color transitions in the rock.
Combined with Azat Reservoir or the Yeranos Mountains, Pink Canyon creates a day centered almost entirely on landscape, geology and photography.
