Azat Reservoir is a scenic mountain reservoir in Armenia’s Ararat Province, located on the Azat River at approximately 1,050 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the rugged Yeranos Mountains and open semi-arid landscapes, the reservoir is especially known for its striking contrast between blue water, dramatic mountain slopes, and wide Armenian skies.
The reservoir was put into operation in 1976 and has a total capacity of about 70 million cubic meters. Its surface area is approximately 2.85 km², and its maximum depth reaches about 72 meters. The reservoir plays an important role in supplying irrigation water to the fertile Ararat Valley.
Azat Reservoir has also become an attractive destination for landscape and travel photography. Calm mornings can produce beautiful reflections on the water, while sunset light brings out the textures and colors of the surrounding mountains. Seasonal changes in water level and vegetation create very different photographic conditions throughout the year.
The reservoir can be combined with visits to some of Armenia’s best-known attractions, including Garni Temple, the Azat Gorge, the Symphony of Stones, and Geghard Monastery, making it a natural stop on a day trip from Yerevan.
