Mount Apakeqar rises between the villages of Hovk and Haghartsin in Tavush Province, within Dilijan National Park. Also known locally as Abeghakar, the mountain reaches about 1,651 metres above sea level and forms a distinctive forest-covered landmark above the Aghstev valley.
The approach passes through the green mountain scenery characteristic of Dilijan before reaching more open viewpoints higher on the slopes. Although considerably lower than peaks such as Dimats, Apakeqar offers broad views toward the Ijevan Mountains and the surrounding forested valleys without requiring an expedition into Armenia’s highest alpine terrain.
Its relatively moderate elevation also gives the mountain a different hiking character. Apakeqar is visited during several seasons and is even used for winter hiking, when snow changes the shape and texture of the forested slopes. Autumn is equally distinctive, as the surrounding deciduous woodland turns into layers of yellow, copper and deep green.
From a photographer’s perspective, Apakeqar works particularly well as a place for layered mountain landscapes: forest in the foreground, valleys below and the rocky Ijevan ridges beyond. Its combination of woodland trail and open summit views makes it one of the quieter hiking landscapes of the Dilijan area.
