Tavush Province is located in northeastern Armenia and is one of the country’s greenest and most forested regions. Its administrative center is Ijevan, while Dilijan, Berd and Noyemberyan are among its other important towns. According to the 2022 population census, the province has around 115,000 residents.
The region is characterized by forest-covered mountains, deep valleys, rivers, mountain meadows and picturesque rural settlements. Compared with many of Armenia’s drier regions, Tavush has a relatively mild and humid climate. Summers are generally warm and pleasant, while winters are cold and snowy in the higher mountain areas.
Dilijan is the best-known tourist destination in Tavush and is surrounded by the forests and mountains of Dilijan National Park. The area is famous for its peaceful natural environment, hiking trails and scenic lakes. Lake Parz and Gosh Lake are popular destinations for walking, outdoor recreation and nature photography.
Tavush also has an exceptional medieval heritage. Haghartsin Monastery and Goshavank are among the region’s most important historical monuments, beautifully integrated into the surrounding forest landscapes. Their architecture, stone carvings and mountain settings make them especially attractive for cultural and photography tours.
The forests around Yenokavan offer another side of Tavush. The Lastiver area is known for its dramatic gorge, caves, waterfalls and hiking trails. Yenokavan has also developed into an important destination for adventure activities such as zip-lining, horseback riding and off-road experiences.
Agriculture remains an important part of rural life in Tavush, with fruit growing, vineyards, livestock farming and local food traditions contributing to the character of the region. Forest villages, orchards and small family farms add to its authentic countryside atmosphere.
Tavush is especially suitable for nature, hiking, cultural, adventure and photography tours. Photographers can capture misty forests, autumn colors, mountain villages, waterfalls, medieval monasteries and atmospheric landscapes. Its combination of rich greenery, historic architecture and outdoor activities makes Tavush one of Armenia’s most distinctive destinations.
