Dilijan is a picturesque mountain town in Tavush Province, located in northeastern Armenia and surrounded by the dense forests of Dilijan National Park. With a population of around 16,300 residents, the town is one of Armenia’s best-known resort and nature destinations.
Situated at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, Dilijan has a cool mountain climate with pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The surrounding forests, mountain valleys, rivers and lakes create a noticeably greener environment than many other regions of Armenia.
Dilijan is especially known for its traditional architecture, artistic atmosphere and historic center. Sharambeyan Street preserves the character of old Dilijan with 19th-century buildings, artisan workshops, galleries and traditional Armenian crafts. The city lies within the landscapes of Dilijan National Park, one of Armenia’s most important protected natural areas. Forest trails lead through mountain meadows, streams and valleys toward destinations such as Lake Parz, Gosh Lake and several historic monasteries.
Some of Armenia’s most important medieval monuments are located near Dilijan. Haghartsin Monastery stands in a forested mountain valley, while Goshavank is known for its medieval architecture and finely carved khachkars. The secluded monasteries of Matosavank and Jukhtakavank can also be reached by hiking trails from the surrounding area.
