The Symphony of Stones is one of Armenia’s most remarkable geological natural monuments. It is located in Garni Gorge in Kotayk Province, below the village and Temple of Garni, along the Azat River. The gorge walls contain enormous basalt columns arranged with such regular geometry that they appear almost artificially constructed. The formation is also known as the “Basalt Organ” because the long columns resemble the pipes of a giant musical organ.
The columns were created through natural volcanic processes. As thick basaltic lava cooled and contracted, it fractured into long polygonal sections, producing predominantly hexagonal and pentagonal columns. In some parts of the gorge the columns hang almost vertically from the cliff, while elsewhere they bend, tilt or spread outward. Some of the columns reach approximately 40–50 meters in height.
The Azat River flows directly below the basalt formations and has gradually exposed the volcanic rock as it carved the gorge. The combination of geometric stone columns, steep canyon walls, flowing water and the surrounding volcanic landscape creates one of the most distinctive natural scenes in Armenia. The formation is officially recognized as a natural monument and is protected by law.
The Symphony of Stones lies very close to the Garni Temple and can easily be combined with other important sites of the Azat Valley. The wider landscape includes the Garni Gorge, the Azat River and routes toward the Khosrov Forest State Reserve. This combination of geological formations, canyon scenery and nearby cultural monuments makes the area one of the most interesting destinations in Kotayk Province.

The extraordinary regularity of the basalt columns is entirely natural and was created by the cooling and contraction of volcanic lava. Many of the columns have almost perfect hexagonal or pentagonal shapes and can reach around 50 meters in height. Their arrangement resembles the pipes of a monumental church organ, giving the formation its second name — the “Basalt Organ.” The Azat River flows directly below the cliffs, while erosion has gradually revealed the internal structure of the ancient basalt mass. The Symphony of Stones is officially listed as a protected natural monument of Armenia.
Best Time to Visit:
April–May — fresh spring vegetation, mild temperatures and strong water flow in the gorge.
June–September — warm and generally dry conditions suitable for exploring Garni Gorge.
September–October — pleasant temperatures and autumn colors in the surrounding landscape.
Winter — dramatic basalt formations with snow and occasional ice, but paths in the gorge may be more difficult.
