Kotayk Province is located in central Armenia, immediately north and northeast of Yerevan. Its administrative center is Hrazdan, while other important towns include Abovyan, Charentsavan, Yeghvard, Byureghavan, Nor Hachn and Tsaghkadzor. According to the 2022 population census, the province has around 270,000 residents, making it one of Armenia’s more populated regions.
The landscape of Kotayk is remarkably diverse, ranging from dry and semi-arid areas in the south to forested valleys, high mountain slopes and snowy landscapes in the central and northern parts of the province. The region includes parts of the Geghama and Tsaghkunyats mountain systems, as well as the valleys of the Hrazdan and Azat rivers. Its climate changes considerably with altitude: summers are generally warm in lower areas and pleasantly cool in mountain resorts, while winters are cold and snowy, especially around Hrazdan and Tsaghkadzor.
Kotayk is one of Armenia’s richest regions for cultural and historical tourism. Its most famous landmarks include the ancient Temple of Garni, the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery and the Upper Azat Valley, Kecharis Monastery in Tsaghkadzor, Bjni Fortress, Havuts Tar Monastery and the Arch of Charents.
The province is also known for impressive natural attractions. Garni Gorge and its remarkable basalt formation known as the Symphony of Stones are among Armenia’s most photographed geological sites. The region also offers volcanic mountain landscapes, forests, rivers, waterfalls and natural mineral springs around Bjni, Arzni, Arzakan, Aghveran and Hankavan.
Tsaghkadzor is Armenia’s best-known mountain resort and an important destination for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities. During the warmer months, Kotayk is popular for hiking, horseback riding, off-road tours, paragliding and mountain excursions.
Kotayk is especially attractive for cultural, historical, adventure, winter and photography tours. Photographers can capture ancient architecture, dramatic gorges, volcanic mountains, forest landscapes, traditional villages and some of the most iconic views of Mount Ararat. Its proximity to Yerevan also makes Kotayk one of the most convenient regions for day trips and combined tour itineraries.
