Gegharkunik Province is located in eastern Armenia and is the country’s largest province by area. Its administrative center is Gavar, while other important towns include Sevan, Martuni, Vardenis and Chambarak. The province has a population of around 210,000 people and is best known for Lake Sevan, one of Armenia’s most important natural landmarks.

Much of Gegharkunik lies at high altitude. Lake Sevan is situated at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, while the surrounding mountain ranges rise above 3,000 meters. Mount Azhdahak, one of the highest peaks of the Geghama Mountains, reaches 3,597 meters.

The region has a highland continental climate with relatively cool summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer daytime temperatures around Lake Sevan are generally comfortable, often around 20–25°C, while winters are much colder and temperatures frequently fall below freezing. The high elevation creates dramatic seasonal changes and makes the province attractive throughout the year.

Gegharkunik’s landscapes combine the deep blue waters of Lake Sevan, volcanic mountains, alpine meadows, open grasslands and traditional villages. Agriculture and livestock farming play an important role in local life, with grain cultivation, cattle breeding and fishing traditionally connected with the economy of the region.

The province has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Among its best-known attractions are Sevanavank Monastery, Hayravank Monastery, the medieval khachkars of Noratus and the archaeological sites around Lchashen. Lake Sevan and Sevan National Park are also important destinations for nature lovers, birdwatchers and outdoor travelers.

Gegharkunik is especially suitable for sightseeing, cultural tours, hiking, nature excursions, lake activities and photography tours. For photographers, the province offers excellent opportunities to capture Lake Sevan at sunrise and sunset, medieval monasteries overlooking the water, mountain panoramas, village life, dramatic weather and snow-covered winter landscapes.
