Sevan is a lakeside town in Gegharkunik Province, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan. Situated at around 1,900 meters above sea level, it is one of Armenia’s best-known summer and nature destinations and an important gateway for exploring the country’s largest lake.
The town and surrounding area are strongly connected with Lake Sevan, whose vast blue waters and mountain scenery define the character of the region. Summers are generally mild and pleasant compared with the lower parts of Armenia, while winters are cold, windy and snowy due to the high elevation.
The most famous landmark near Sevan is Sevanavank Monastery, situated on a peninsula overlooking the lake. Founded in the 9th century, the monastery is one of Armenia’s most recognizable historical sites and offers panoramic views across Lake Sevan and the surrounding mountains.
The shoreline around Sevan is especially popular during the warmer months. Visitors come for swimming, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding and other water activities, while lakeside restaurants are known for serving local fish and traditional Armenian dishes.
Sevan is also surrounded by landscapes protected as part of Sevan National Park, making the area attractive for nature exploration, birdwatching and outdoor activities. Its location also makes it a convenient stop on routes connecting Yerevan with Dilijan and northern Armenia.
