Victory Park is one of Yerevan’s best-known recreational and memorial areas, located on Azatutyun Avenue above the city center. The park combines landscaped green space, panoramic viewpoints, an artificial lake, amusement areas, and one of Armenia’s most recognizable monuments — Mother Armenia.
Construction of the park began in the late 1930s. After the Second World War, it was renamed Victory Park and developed as a major memorial complex. The present memorial ensemble was designed by architect Rafael Israelyan and became an important part of Yerevan’s postwar urban landscape.
The Mother Armenia monument stands at the highest part of the memorial complex. The present 22-meter copper statue was created by sculptor Ara Harutyunyan and installed in 1967 on the monumental pedestal originally built for an earlier statue. The sculpture depicts a woman holding a sheathed sword, with a shield at her feet, and symbolizes strength, protection, and the endurance of the homeland. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Inside the pedestal is the Mother Armenia Military History Museum. The museum opened in 1970 and presents historical materials related to Armenian participation in the Second World War and later military history. The surrounding memorial area also includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, an Eternal Flame, Heroes’ Alley, and an open-air display of military equipment.
Victory Park itself has long been a popular recreation area for residents and visitors. Its broad avenues, trees, artificial lake, playgrounds, and amusement attractions create a very different atmosphere from the solemn memorial complex nearby.
One of the main attractions of the area is the panoramic view over Yerevan. From the forecourt of the memorial complex, visitors can see large parts of the city, and in clear weather the elevated location can offer impressive long-distance views.
For photographers, Victory Park and Mother Armenia provide a wide range of subjects: monumental sculpture, Soviet-era memorial architecture, military exhibits, tree-lined avenues, urban panoramas, and evening city views. The elevated position is especially attractive around sunset.
The complex is located at 2 Azatutyun Avenue and can easily be combined with a visit to the Cascade Complex and the northern part of central Yerevan. :
