Jermuk is one of Armenia’s best-known mountain resort towns, located in Vayots Dzor Province at approximately 2,080 meters above sea level. The town sits on a high plateau surrounded by mountains, forests and alpine meadows, while the deep gorge of the Arpa River divides Jermuk into two parts. Its name comes from the Armenian word “jerm,” meaning “warm,” a reference to the naturally warm mineral springs for which the area has been known for centuries.
Jermuk’s mineral waters are the foundation of its long spa tradition. One of the town’s most recognizable landmarks is the Mineral Water Gallery, where natural spring water is delivered through five drinking fountains at progressively warmer temperatures, ranging from about 30°C to 57°C. The modern resort began developing rapidly during the Soviet period, when sanatoriums and wellness facilities transformed Jermuk into one of the region’s important health resorts.
Another symbol of the town is Jermuk Waterfall, also known as “Mermaid’s Hair.” The waterfall drops approximately 72 meters into the Arpa River gorge and is among Armenia’s highest and most distinctive waterfalls. According to a local legend, its long flowing streams resemble the hair of a young woman who was transformed into a mermaid. Around Jermuk there are also natural hot springs, forest trails, small lakes and dramatic volcanic mountain landscapes.
Jermuk is attractive throughout the year. Summers are cool and pleasant compared with Armenia’s lower regions, while winters are long, snowy and suited to winter recreation. The town also has a ropeway built in 2007: it is about 1,000 meters long, rises roughly 400 meters and reaches an upper station at around 2,480 meters above sea level. Nearby places of interest include Kechut Reservoir, Gndevank Monastery and the upper Arpa River valley.
