Vayots Dzor Province is located in southern Armenia and is one of the country’s most dramatic and distinctive regions. Its administrative center is Yeghegnadzor, while other important settlements include Vayk, Jermuk, Areni and Yeghegis. With a population of around 47,000 people, it is Armenia’s least populated province.
The landscape is dominated by rugged mountains, narrow gorges, volcanic terrain, open highland pastures, rivers and vineyards. The climate is generally dry and continental, although conditions vary considerably with altitude. Lower valleys experience warm, sunny summers, while the higher mountain areas have cooler summers and cold, snowy winters.
Vayots Dzor is the heart of Armenia’s modern wine tourism and one of the country’s oldest wine-producing regions. Vineyards around Areni grow at elevations of approximately 1,200–1,800 meters and are especially known for indigenous Armenian grape varieties. Areni-1 Cave contains archaeological evidence of a winemaking facility dating back more than 6,000 years, making the area internationally important for the history of wine.
The province has an exceptional cultural and historical heritage. Noravank Monastery, surrounded by the red cliffs of Gnishik Canyon, is its most iconic landmark. Other important sites include Smbataberd Fortress, Gndevank Monastery, Spitakavor Monastery, Tsakhats Kar, the medieval Orbelians’ Caravanserai and the historic village of Yeghegis.
Jermuk adds another dimension to the region. This mountain resort is famous for its mineral waters, forests, deep gorge and impressive waterfall. The surrounding highlands are popular for hiking, winter activities and nature trips.
