Vardanants Square is the civic heart of Gyumri, a broad central space where the city’s architecture, public life and history come together. The square took its modern form during the Soviet period, but the buildings around it represent several different chapters in Gyumri’s development.
On opposite sides stand two of the city’s best-known churches: the dark-stone Seven Wounds Cathedral and the monumental Holy Saviour Church. Gyumri City Hall, the October Cinema and other historic buildings complete the architectural frame, while the central memorial is dedicated to Vardan Mamikonian and figures associated with the Battle of Avarayr.
The square is not only a sightseeing location. Festivals, concerts, ceremonies and everyday city life regularly fill the open space, making it one of the best places to observe the rhythm of modern Gyumri.
Its large scale also makes the square particularly attractive for photography. Wide-angle compositions can include the monument, churches and surrounding architecture, while blue hour and evening illumination create a completely different atmosphere after sunset.
Because several of Gyumri’s main walking routes begin here, Vardanants Square works naturally as an introduction to the city before entering the smaller streets of the historic district.
