About this activity

Mount Ara is an extinct volcanic mountain located between the Kasagh and Hrazdan river valleys, on the border of Armenia’s Aragatsotn and Kotayk regions. Rising to 2,577 metres above sea level, the mountain is known for its distinctive volcanic form and wide open landscapes.

The hike takes you through mountain terrain toward the upper part of Mount Ara, with broad views of the surrounding countryside along the way. The total hiking distance is approximately 9 km, with around 5–6 hours spent on foot.

Mount Ara is closely associated with one of Armenia’s best-known legends — the story of King Ara the Beautiful and the Assyrian queen Shamiram. According to Armenian tradition, Shamiram became fascinated by Ara and tried to win his love. After Ara rejected her, conflict followed, and he was mortally wounded in battle near the mountain. The legend later became closely connected with Mount Ara and its name.

The slopes of the mountain are also home to Tsaghkevank, a cave sanctuary associated in local tradition with Saint Varvara. Water dripping inside the sanctuary has traditionally been considered by visitors to have healing properties.

The ascent is considered moderate. No technical mountaineering experience is required, but participants should be in reasonable physical condition and comfortable walking uphill and downhill for several hours.

The itinerary, departure time and overall timing may be adjusted depending on the season, weather, trail conditions and the pace of the group.
